Arts Council England (ACE) has today awarded more than £6.8m to 82 organisations through its Renaissance strategic support fund for 2012/13.
This fund aims to address geographical funding gaps in the East Midlands and South Yorkshire, and the development of knowledge through research to address issues across the museum sector.
Recipients include the Museums Association (MA), the Collections Trust, the Association of Independent Museums and the Local Government Association for projects that address national issues including workforce development, security and leadership in local authority museums.
Awards were also granted to the Museum of East Anglian Life (£146,000) for a second round of the Happy Museum project; Gloucestershire County Council (£92,000) to build its digital offering; and Poole Museum Service (£97,000) to develop access to collections and create a new volunteering team.
A partnership project between University College London (UCL), the University of the Arts London (UAL) and the London Museums Group has been awarded £100,000 to explore ways to connect London’s specialist museums with additional resources and sources of expertise within universities.
Three museum services have received funding covering a three-year period.
In the East Midlands, which has no major museum partners, Derby Museums received £1.39m in strategic funding, which will be used to develop a new enlightenment gallery at Derby Museum and Art Gallery, as well as income-generation and a volunteer recruitment programme.
Peter Smith, chairman of the Derby Museums Trust, said: “With this award our plans for improvement and development become closer to reality.”
Nottingham Museums and Galleries received £1.3m to develop strategic partnerships with national and international museums and institutions.
Museums Sheffield, which missed out on major partner funding, received £1.2m until 2014/15 for audience engagement, improved access to the archaeology collection and workforce development.

ACE has also confirmed 25 projects involving museum collections that will receive about £1.7m through the Designation development fund for activities taking place between 2012 and 2014.
They include Leeds City Museum to research, document and rehouse its collection of bird skins for better public access, and the Weald and Downland Museum to develop an activity programme to celebrate the art of thatching
