More than 3,500 items from the collection of the Elmbridge Museum in Weybridge were due to be transferred to the Surrey History Centre in Woking ahead of the museum’s planned closure on 20 August.

A spokeswoman for Elmbridge Borough Council said the number of redundancies at the museum had yet to be determined.

“In many cases, Elmbridge Museum hopes to transfer items to other museums where a better balance of care and access can be achieved,” said the council website.

The rest of the 41,000 objects in the collection are to be transferred to a collections resource centre, which is being built in the borough.

Funding arrangements for the proposed centre, which does not have a scheduled opening date, are yet to be confirmed, added the council spokeswoman.
