Harriet Harman, the shadow secretary of state for culture, has called for assurances that the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) is not going to be scrapped.
Writing in the London Evening Standard, Harman said there were “well-sourced” rumours in Westminster that the DCMS would be scrapped after the Olympics.
She appealed to David Cameron to give an assurance that he would not abolish the DCMS. “The department must not be silenced: if anything, its voice needs to be even stronger,” she said.
Harman added that the department was a focal point for the arts, giving them an important voice at the heart of government.
