Arts Council England (ACE) announced two new Designated collections last month.

The collections recognised for their national and international significance are held in the BT Archives and Black Country Living Museum.

Andrew Lovett, director of the Black Country Living Museum, said the award recognised the strength of the collection and was an endorsement of how they were engaging visitors.

“Even in testing economic times, when we are having to adapt to difficult trading conditions, used wisely, it will further help us to fulfil the museum’s potential,” he said. “It is the museum equivalent of an AAA rating.”

There are 140 Designated collections in England, held by 112 different organisations. For museums to qualify for major grant funding, the replacement for Renaissance hub funding, they must have a Designated collection.
