The Museums Association (MA) has launched a major project to produce a vision of the future of museums.

Museums 2020 will be delivered as a rolling programme of debate and collaboration involving people from across the sector and other organisations.

The MA’s head of policy and communication, Maurice Davies, said: “In difficult times, when everyone is feeling the pressure of cuts, there is real value in having a positive vision of the future that focuses on the purpose and impact of museums. We need to think beyond the current financial situation and find ways to revitalise and enthuse museums.”

The work is likely to focus on several specific issues such as community participation and engagement; wellbeing and happiness; and museums and social justice.

The first stage of Museums 2020 will start in April and is designed to open up thinking and generate ideas through workshops and roundtables across the UK.

The MA will also invite partner organisations to undertake detailed pieces of work.

In the second stage, the MA will draw on the ideas to draft, consult on, build support for and finalise a vision of museums and their impact, which is expected to be delivered early in 2014 and used to advocate to funders and policy makers.

MA director Mark Taylor said: “The sand is shifting – museum and the people that work in them need to plan for change, lead change and make the most of change.”
