The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) is on the hunt for a new director after Mark Jones was elected master of St Cross College, Oxford.

Jones, who will take up his new role on 1 September 2011, has been at the V&A since 2001, following nine years as director of National Museums Scotland.

He was awarded a knighthood for services to the arts in the 2010 New Year honours list.

Jones said: “After 10 enormously enjoyable years at the V&A, a period in which the public interest in creative design has grown significantly in Britain and abroad, I now look forward to taking on a new role as master of St Cross College.”

Jones is a former chairman of the National Museum Directors’ Conference.
