The Welsh Assembly Government’s Department for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills may withdraw £400,000 in funding for Adult Learners’ Week. Adult Learners’ Week is coordinated by the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE) Dysgu Cymru.

According to sources, the decision to withdraw funding was taken by a civil servant without the knowledge of education minister Leighton Andrews. The minister could reverse the decision, pending a consultation.

Learning providers in every Welsh local authority, including museums and archives, take part in more than 800 events during the festival. Participation has risen from 4,000 to 35,000 over the past decade.
