The Victoria and Albert Museum has launched a design competition to create an underground gallery space for temporary exhibitions on Exhibition Road.
The new building, which will free up space at Cromwell Road for the permanent collection, will be built on the Boilerhouse Yard site, originally intended for Daniel Libeskind’s Spiral, a £70m project shelved in 2004 amid funding concerns.
The competition is to design a below-ground gallery of about 1,500sq m, a courtyard space for installations, performances or a cafe, as well as a new entrance through Sir Aston Webb’s historic arched stone screen on to Exhibition Road.
Submissions close on 27 October.
