The University of Liverpool has launched a study into popular-music collections in museums in order to inform future collection policies.
The nationwide research will look at the different approaches to displaying music collections. It also aims to demonstrate how they can be used to interpret culture and society for the public.
Marion Leonard, lead curator at the university’s Institute of Popular Music, said popular music and its historic significance was underrepresented in museum displays.
“The study will identify how we can develop exhibitions so that there is a better understanding of the role popular music has in culture,” she added.
