Bangladesh: Nine gold medals and 17 antique silver coins were stolen from the National Museum in Dhaka and replaced with bronze and steel replicas. Culture minister Promod Mankin said: “We know for sure that some of the museum officials are responsible.”
China: Lars Nittve, former director of the Moderna Museet in Stockholm and Tate Modern in London, has been appointed director of M+, a museum project planned for the West Kowloon Cultural District in Hong Kong. Nittve, who will report to chief executive Graham Sheffield (former artistic director at London’s Barbican Centre), will take the reins in January.
Israel: The Israel Museum in Jerusalem unveiled its revamped west Jerusalem hilltop campus last month, following a four-year renovation. The $100m refurbishment includes expanded exhibition galleries and the reinstallation of the museum’s holdings in three collection wings. The museum plans to present touring shows, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art’s William Kentridge display.
The Netherlands: The Mauritshuis museum in the Hague is set to expand into an adjacent building. An underground walkway will link the institution’s Golden Age palace to an art deco building by 2014, providing space for temporary exhibitions. The government will partly fund the €22m project by increasing its annual grant by €1.5m.
Russia: Two museum staff who organised a controversial exhibition at Moscow’s Sakharov Museum in 2007 have been found guilty of inciting religious hatred. Yuri Samodurov, a former director of the museum, was fined almost $6,500 and curator Andrei Yerofeyev $4,800. Among Forbidden Art-2006’s offending works was a painting of Jesus with a Mickey Mouse head.
Spain: Madrid-based dealer Helga de Alvear is donating her collection of contemporary art to the town of Caceres in western Spain, on condition that local officials raise enough funds to build a museum for her holdings. An exhibition drawn from de Alvear’s collection, which includes works by Donald Judd and Thomas Demand, opened in June in a former university building.
US: The San Diego Natural History Museum has increased admission fees by $1 (a full-price ticket costs $16) and cancelled a series of education programmes in an attempt to balance its $10.6m annual budget.
