A lack of time, the cost and not having enough information are the three main reasons why people don’t visit museums and art galleries, according to research by Nottingham Trent University.

Its study into the barriers to participation in the arts found that 34.5 per cent of those surveyed said they didn’t have time to attend events, while 32.8 per cent blamed the cost and 26 per cent cited a lack of information.

Other reasons given include the travelling distance, having no one to go with and a lack of interest in the arts.

Based on the responses, the researchers said people could be broadly categorised into six groups: the time conscious; non-motivated; uninformed; isolated; arts resistant; and no barriers.

Glenn Williams, a researcher from the university’s division of psychology, said the research would help local authorities develop specific initiatives to increase people’s engagement in the arts.
