The four candidates for the Art Fund Prize have undergone more than £110m of redevelopment in the past year.
The shortlisted museums are: Blists Hill Victorian Town, part of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust; the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum in Coventry; the Ashmolean in Oxford; and Belfast’s Ulster Museum.
A panel of judges selected the four museums from a longlist of 11. As well as visiting the museums, the judges were also able to read visitor comments from a public poll.
Sally Osman, one of the judges and the former director of communications at the BBC, said: “These four museums all have a powerful story to tell.”
The winner will be announced on 30 June at the Royal Institute of British Architects in London.
