Last call for MLA scheme
Applications for the Museums, Libraries and Archive Council’s Creative Apprenticeship scheme close on 14 May. The two-year programme combines classroom-based tuition with on-the-job skills for up to 50 people under 24. The MLA provides £5,000 a year towards employment costs.
Exeter revamp costs soar
Refurbishment costs at Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum will significantly exceed the original £15m budget as a result of problems with the building’s foundations, which are constructed over a Norman trench. Exeter City Council will foot half the bill, with the Heritage Lottery Fund providing most of the remainder. The museum is set to reopen in spring 2011 – 12 months late.
Worcestershire savings
Unifying Worcestershire’s museums services is likely to save £103,000 this financial year. Worcester City Council and Worcestershire County Council have merged their budgets and staff have transferred to the county authority. But museum buildings and collections stay under separate ownership. Ian Rutherford, previously city council arts and heritage manager, becomes museums general manager.
Waterways sites renamed
Two of the three branches of the National Waterways Museum have been rebranded. The Gloucester Docks Museum has become Gloucester Waterways Museum, while the Stoke Bruerne Museum, in Northamptonshire, has reverted to its original name of the Canal Museum. The third site, in Ellesmere Port, will continue as the National Waterways Museum.
