Australia: An independent museum in the Queensland outback, the Australian Workers Heritage Centre, has been exonerated of misusing a government grant, forcing the leader of the opposition, John-Paul Langbroek, to apologise. He claimed the museum had donated $70,000 to the ruling Labor party when, in fact, it had been a loan repayment.
Austria: A right-wing politician is being investigated for possible anti-Semitism after calling Hanno Loewy, the director of the Jewish Museum Hohenems, a "Jew in exile from America" - a derogatory term for people who escaped the Holocaust. Dieter Egger, head of the Austrian Freedom Party in the province of Vorarlberg, was stung by German-born Loewy's criticism of the Freedom Party's election campaign that only "native" Austrians should receive family benefits.
Canada: The Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton, New Brunswick, has won a victory in the Canadian courts. The gallery, established by Lord Beaverbrook, has won its legal battle with the Beaverbrook Foundation over who owns the majority of the founding collection, which includes work by Lucian Freud and Salvador Dali. The foundation claimed that the paintings were only on loan.
Iraq: A painting seized by Iraqi special forces, thought to be by Picasso and possibly looted from Kuwait during the 1990 occupation, has failed to impress experts. The back of the unframed canvas of a female nude says "the Louvre" and "The Museum of Kuwait". But neither museum has ever owned a Picasso.
Japan: The Japanese government is seeking further information before deciding whether to repatriate human remains collected in 1945 from the island of Saipan by a US Navy doctor. In 1974, the doctor donated the bones to the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology, at the University of California.
US: An 88-year-old survivor of the Holocaust has won the latest round of his five-year fight in the US courts with Madrid's Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and the Spanish government to reclaim a painting by Camille Pissarro. Claude Cassirer claims his grandmother was forced to sell the painting for $360 to pay for a visa to flee Nazi Germany.
US: The Cleveland Museum of Art is seeking permission from the Ohio courts to divert income from four endowment funds normally restricted to purchasing art, to help it complete its expansion. An east wing opened in June, but $138m is needed to build a west wing and atrium.
