The Design Museum is on the verge of securing a new venue at the former Commonwealth Institute following approval by the planning committee of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea last month.

The building, three times the size of the museum's current venue in East London, would allow it to display its permanent collection of over 2,000 objects, which is currently in storage.

The museum is awaiting authorisation for the plans from English Heritage and the Greater London Authority and is hoping to open at the new venue in 2013.
