Cartwright Hall in Bradford has been forced to close indefinitely after a ceiling in the 105-year-old listed building collapsed.
Tim Hirst, assistant director commercial and support services at Bradford council, said: "A small section of ceiling in a basement office fell in, and as a precaution, all the ceilings in the art gallery and museum were checked.
"Following a survey of the rest of the building, it was found that essential plasterwork was needed on other ceilings. So we took the decision to close the building, as a safety precaution.
"We are working with our conservation team on how repairs can be carried out. We do not know how much repairs will cost."
