Visitor numbers at 34 local-authority funded and independent museums across Northern Ireland increased by 5.7 per cent last year to 535,725.
Chris Bailey, director of the Northern Ireland Museums Council, said the rise was the result of an "upgrade in museums marketing and an improvement in the calibre of events" across the sector.
The number of visitors to the Irish Linen Centre and Lisburn Museum rose 17.9 per cent last year to 60,507.
Admissions for Fermanagh County Museum and the Inniskillings Museum fell 36.2 per cent on 2007 as a result of the site's Castle Keep being closed for redevelopment for most of 2008.
