A project at the Grange Museum in the London borough of Brent has been singled out by the Audit Commission for praise in an independent report, published last month.
The My Life, Our Community project, ran at the museum last year and brought 16 to 25 year-olds and the over-60s together to produce art, poetry and other creations to explain how Brent inspired them. The AC report covered the whole of Brent council's cultural services.
The good news came a month after the museum closed its doors after 28 years. The museum will reopen in spring 2006 in a newly refurbished premises within the Willesden Green Library Centre, providing a larger, more flexible space for the museum's 8,700 items.
Alex Sydney, the head of heritage services, said: 'In the middle of a roundabout [original premises] we don't get much passing trade. The annual footfall of the new complex is one million people a year. If we moved exactly the same museum our visitor figures would be improved - but we are vastly improving the display.'
The Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded £1.27m to the library and museum space refurbishment, to be match-funded by Brent council.
