Kate Brindley has been appointed as director of the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (Mima). Brindley, who is director of Museums, Galleries and Archives for Bristol City Council, will take up the post in July.
Dave Budd, Middlesbrough council's executive member for regeneration and economic development, described the appointment as a "major coup".
He said: "To attract such a high-profile, nationally-known figure demonstrates the strategic importance that Mima is taking on the national arts scene."
Brindley said she was attracted to Mima because of its emerging national and international reputation. "I am a visual arts specialist by background and am also interested in contemporary applied arts. I am passionate about making the visual arts accessible."
She said she had no qualms about leaving Bristol where she has been for four years, The service is currently undergoing a restructure and is two years away from the opening of the £24m Museum of Bristol.
Campaigners have suggested that more than 30 curatorial and conservation posts could go as a result of the review.
