Research by the Museums Association (MA) has found that 64 per cent of jobs advertised in 2008-09 showed a starting salary below that recommended in the MA's guidelines - down from 69 per cent in 2007-08.
For entry-level jobs, only 13 per cent of visitor services posts and 45 per cent of collections and learning posts met the recommended starting salary.
The fall in posts funded by Renaissance in the Regions has led to a reduction in the number of jobs requiring two to three years' experience, leading to worries that employees will not easily be able to progress their careers.
Rebecca Jacobs, the MA's museum development officer, said: "In recent years, there has been an abundance of mid-career jobs, largely thanks to Renaissance in the Regions funding. Worryingly, many of these are advertising salaries below the amount recommended by the MA.
"These jobs have started to disappear as Renaissance shifts its focus away from capacity building, but the mid-career pay crisis remains. This poses questions about our ability to retain vital skills and talented future leaders in the present economic climate."
The MA website will publish the 2009-10 salary guidelines later this month.
