The Royal Armouries in Leeds has appointed a director general and master of arms. Lieutenant-general Jonathon Riley, a former army commander in Iraq and one of Britain's most senior generals, will take up the post in June.

The museum has not had a master of arms in post since Paul Evans was suspended in April last year, pending an investigation into "potential irregularities". He was suspended on full pay and resigned in September.

The investigation was halted as a result of Evans' resignation and a spokeswoman for the Armouries said the museum was satisfied that there was no ongoing issue to be investigated.

Riley is a visiting fellow in modern history at the University of Birmingham, and chairman of the Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum and Archive Trust, based at Caernarvon Castle.

Describing the position as his "dream job", he said: "I share their passion for the collection and am looking forward immensely to providing the necessary leadership to take the museum forward."

A new role of chief executive officer has been created for Janice Murray, who had been on secondment from the National Railway Museum in York since November 2008.
