The Industrial Museum at Wollaton Hall in Nottingham is threatened with closure following a spending squeeze by the city council. The adjoining Yard Gallery, a temporary exhibition venue, could also shut.

A council spokesman said that the closures would save the council £66,000 a year. The Labour-controlled authority, which has an estimated £20m budget shortfall, has begun a 90-day consultation on the proposal.

Both galleries attract more than 140,000 visitors annually, but the spokesman declined to reveal the number of staff that they employed.
He added that no interested parties had come forward to help run the museum.
