A manifesto calling on museums to be more welcoming to families was launched last month.

The Kids in Museums Manifesto calls for museums to have dedicated family days, be more interactive and ensure that everything from guides to toilets are child friendly.

Dea Birkett, director of Kids in Museums, which produced the 20-point manifesto, said she hoped as many museums as possible would sign up.

Responding to critics of the manifesto, who have argued for museums to be quiet havens, Birkett said there was room for all tastes. "One of the things the manifesto calls for is family-friendly days," she said. "So if you want contemplative space, don't go on that day. There are many ways of behaving in a museum. Don't presume that all children want noise."

Kids in Museums has been given a £40,000 start-up grant by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council.

Birkett said this would help fund its next project, Take Your Granny day in November, where young visitors will be encouraged to take an older person to a museum.
