Lottery awards launched
The National Lottery Awards 2009 launched last month with a call for entries. Organisers are seeking heritage projects that have received National Lottery funding in the past 14 years. There are seven award categories including heritage, arts and the environment. The first round of public voting takes place on 22 June and the winners will be unveiled in a BBC1 show.
BBC puts art online
The BBC has teamed up with the Public Catalogue Foundation charity to put online more than 200,000 oil paintings in public ownership in the UK by 2012. The works will be accessible via a new section, Your Paintings, on the BBC website.
V&A unveils Jameel Prize
The Victoria and Albert Museum has introduced a £25,000 international art prize for contemporary artists and designers inspired by Islamic traditions of craft and design. Nine practitioners, including Kuwaiti-born Hamra Abbas and Iranian Afruz Amighi, have been nominated for the Jameel Prize, which will be awarded every two years. The winner will be announced in July.
Eureka targets London
The Halifax-based children's museum Eureka has announced plans to open a branch in London. The museum is looking at the Grade II listed former Midland Goods Shed at King's Cross, which is part of a 740,000 sq metre regeneration project. Illustrator Quentin Blake is developing a Museum of Illustration on the King's Cross site.
