Nine national museums have launched a service that combines their collections online for the first time.

The National Museums Online Learning Project, which was started in 2006, aims to boost access to the online collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, Tate, British Museum, National Portrait Gallery, Imperial War Museum, Natural History Museum, Royal Armouries, Sir John Soane's Museum and the Wallace Collection.

The £1.75m project is funded by the Treasury and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. It includes WebQuests, an educational tool that requires pupils to complete key stage tasks by using the partner collections' websites.

The project also features Creative Spaces, a social networking application where users can search across all nine websites to find items for personalised "notebooks".

Online celebrity videos have been made to mark the launch including stars such as Tony Robinson.
