The National Portrait Gallery underwent a peer review last month as part of the pilot project to implement the findings of Brian McMaster's report on excellence in the arts.
The report recommended peer review and self-assessment as an alternative to "top-down targets".
The pilot reviews are based on self-assessments carried out by the National Portrait Gallery, Natural History Museum and Tyne and Wear Museums.
The review panel then checks the findings of the assessment and compiles a final report.
The review panel for the portrait gallery consisted of Kevin Fewster, director of the National Maritime Museum, William Proby, ex-chairman of the National Trust, and Deborah Swallow, director of the Courtauld Institute.
National Portrait Gallery director Sandy Nairne said it was a strong panel and he was positive about the process. "My choice would be for the report to be published and made public," he added.
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has said it plans to publish the reports in the first quarter of next year and then roll out the peer review system in April.
Tyne and Wear Museums and the Natural History Museum will undergo their peer reviews this month.
