Leeds City Art Gallery was forced to close for a day in July because two members of staff called in sick.

A spokesman for the gallery said operational glitches had led to the closure, rather than staff cuts or a spending squeeze.

"Leeds City Art Gallery was forced to close. . . due to unforeseen circumstances as two members of staff called in sick, leaving too few staff to have the building open.

"We are experiencing a temporary problem in terms of staff levels at the art gallery, but this is being addressed, as a recruitment process for new staff is now under way.

"In the interim period, we are using agency staff to cover the shortfall. But as soon as the new staff are in place in the next few weeks, we are confident there will be no such problems in future."
