National Museums Scotland (NMS) has received its biggest-ever windfall after a patron left £2m in her will.

Adele Stewart from Edinburgh was a regular visitor to the city's Royal Museum and became a patron in 2006.

Gordon Rintoul, director of NMS, said: "She was a proud Scot who had travelled the world, took deep interest in cultural and community activities, and was deeply connected to Edinburgh and its institutions."

He added that she was determined that others could experience the educational benefit that she had derived from the museum.

The new world culture galleries will be named after the donor in recognition of her love of the East Asia collections. The galleries are being developed as part of the museum's £46m makeover, which will open to the public in 2011.
