Mick Elliott, chief executive of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, has been appointed director of culture at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).

He will take up his new role in June and will have responsibility for advising ministers and implementing and delivering policy across the arts, museums and galleries and heritage.

Elliott, who is also the associate cultural director of the Liverpool Culture Company, was previously chief executive of the Heart of England Tourist Board. He was also formerly the chief executive of the regional arts board for the West Midlands, West Midlands Arts.

He takes over at the DCMS from Alan Davey, who left to become the chief executive of Arts Council England at the beginning of this year.
