Loyd Grossman is to quit as the chairman of trustees at National Museums Liverpool (NML) on 1 July, a year before his term is up.

He told the Liverpool Echo that it had been a privilege working for NML and that the next chairperson should be based in the Liverpool area.

NML was maintaining that it was business as usual, but it is understood that there have been differences of opinion between Grossman and the NML management. A source said the chairman "shouldn't be trying to run the show".

The appointment of a new chairperson is in the hands of the department for culture. An independent selection panel will draw up a shortlist and conduct interviews. It will then recommend someone to the minister, who has the final say.

A spokesman for the department said the post would be advertised and he hoped that someone would be in place by the summer.
