Visitors up in N Ireland
Almost a million people visited Northern Ireland's 38 museums in 2006, according to a survey published by the Northern Ireland Museums Council. The total of 971,464 visitors represented a 7 per cent increase on the 2005 figure. New research by the council also revealed that Northern Ireland's museums hold almost 1.8 million objects.
Scottish projects funding
Four heritage and museum projects have been awarded funding totalling £153,655 by the Scottish government-funded Recognition Scheme. The University of Aberdeen has been awarded £40,000 to create an online database of its museum collections.
The other recipients are Perth and Kinross Council Heritage Service (£39,999), the Museum of Lead Mining in Wanlockhead (£39,668) and the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses (£33,988).
Art Fund Collect prize
The Art Fund was set to select the winners of its Art Fund Collect initiative, as Museums Journal went to press. Ten museums including National Museum Wales and the Whitworth Art Gallery were shortlisted for the chance to win a share of a £50,000 fund to be spent on contemporary craft at the V&A's Collect fair.
Paintings database live
An online database of almost 8,000 paintings from 200 UK museums has been launched. The National Inventory of Continental Paintings (www.vads.ahds.ac.uk/collections/NIRP) has been created by the National Inventory Research Project, an organisation founded by the University of Glasgow; London's National Gallery; and Birkbeck College, University of London.
