Museums in the South West of England have said that their regional agency is not providing an effective service.

The South West Federation of Museums and Galleries launched a manifesto last month after consulting 180 museums. The federation said museums thought that the agency provided "little engagement, no meaningful information-seeking activity and no feedback to engender confidence in its activities".

Federation chairwoman Tamsin Daniel said: "Staff in museums feel disenfranchised and distant from the decision-making. They don't feel like they've got a voice. It is about how the MLA is perceived by people at the coalface."

Gordon Reid, deputy chief executive of MLA South West, said: "We recognise the concern, but the museum development officer networks have delivered in the region. It's a communication issue."
