The Watts Gallery is the first to exploit the Museums Association's (MA) revised Code of Ethics on disposal.
The rewording of the Code of Ethics to allow financially motivated disposals in "exceptional circumstances" was passed by a majority of MA members at its annual general meeting in October.
Caitlin Griffiths, the head of professional issues at the MA, said each would be judged on a case-by-case basis.
The Watts Gallery, Surrey, is offering two paintings for sale to accredited museums and galleries, to raise funds to help with the conservation of its core collection.
Hedley Swain, the head of museum policy at the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council, said: "Proposals to bring ethics and disposal guidelines in line with current practice and the MA will go to the December MLA accreditation panel."
