National Museums Scotland and the Shetland Amenity Trust have discussed the return of the St Ninian's Treasure to the islands.
The significant find of Pictish silver, believed to date from around 800AD, was found on St Ninian's Isle and is currently in the collection of the National Museums of Scotland in Edinburgh.
But a campaign to bring the treasure back to Shetland has gained momentum over the summer.
National museums director, Gordon Rintoul, described a recent meeting as "positive". He added that the treasure would remain in the national museums' collection, but would be loaned to the Shetland Museum next year for an exhibition to mark the 50th anniversary of its discovery.
