David Cameron has called for a focus on heritage as a major part of the UK’s tourism offer.

The prime minister said that the £115bn-a-year tourism sector was “fundamental” to rebuilding the UK’s struggling economy.

In a speech at the Serpentine Gallery, London, Cameron said he wanted to see the UK in the top five destinations in the world, and expressed a desire for more Britons to holiday at home.

He added that John Penrose, the minister for tourism and heritage, was working on a report on domestic tourism, which is due to be published in October.

The aim is to boost the amount that UK residents spend on domestic tourism from 36 to 50 per cent.

Cameron said the coalition would develop “the strongest possible tourism strategy”.
