Manchester Museum has launched an inflatable version of the museum on Oxford Road to engage schoolchildren with its collections.

Developed in partnership with designers and sound artists, the inflatable museum incorporates a performance area, exploratory activity spaces and projection and audio equipment.

The project, which received funding from the Zochonis Charitable Trust, is part of The University of Manchester’s widening participation strategy designed to connect young people from disadvantaged areas with the museum’s collections.

The inflatable museum will facilitate workshops in school halls across greater Manchester. It is inflatable in less than 30 minutes and incorporates moveable cabinets and a presentation space.

Nick Merriman, the museum’s director, said he was delighted to move the museum’s free education programme into its next phase with the inflatable museum, which will allow the museum to meet the demand for its oversubscribed schools programme in a fun and accessible way.

The museum’s yearly education workshops currently reach 25,000 early-years and primary school pupils and 5,000 secondary and post-16 students across Manchester, and it is hoped the new programme will add to that.

The inflatable museum launched in Albert Square on 13 April and will deliver workshops to five partner primary schools in Longsight, Levenshulme and Crumpsall.
