Primary school pupils in Margate will work with artists to transform areas of the town as part of a project led by the Turner Contemporary gallery.

Over 18 months, the Art Inspiring Change project will involve 80 pupils from four primary schools in Margate working on the creative regeneration of areas close to their schools.

they will be guided by four artists, chosen from a shortlist by the children themselves through a “playful” interview process.

“I loved it all – it was ‘futurous’…that means a dream come true!” said a pupil at Holy Trinity and St John Primary School.

The project launched on 8 January and is funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. It aims to nurture the children’s leadership, communication and negotiation skills.

As part of the project, the gallery will lead 15-week courses at each primary school, designed to help parents support the children. The courses are supported by the Art Fund.

Sarah Philp, the head of programmes at the Art Fund, said:

“We are investing in the future of museums through extending our support for projects which provide innovative museum-based training opportunities, help museums build new audiences and advocates, and encourage as many people as possible to connect with and enjoy great art.”

The project will also involve the pupils’ teachers working alongside the gallery’s learning team and its philosopher in residence, Ayisha de Lanerolle.

Activities and workshops for the children's schools, families and communities will be held at Turner Contemporary in June.
