Fellowship of the MA

Encouraging an advanced level of professional contribution
What is the Fellowship of the Museums Association?

The Fellowship of the Museums Association (FMA) is a professional development award that recognises and encourages an advanced level of professional contribution, development and achievement by people in any area of museum work.

Who are Fellows of the Museums Association?

Fellows go above and beyond their job role:

• leading change in an organisation, area of practice, or thinking, which has significant impact

• supporting the development of others

• generously sharing their skills and knowledge

• advocating for museums and the work of museums.

The Museums Association champions the value of museums to society and supports people who work in and for them (including volunteers); this mission and the Museums Association’s key values of independence, creativity, integrity and inclusivity, underpin the above criteria for achieving the FMA.

Case studies

Sally Macdonald, Len Pole, Isabel Churcher, and Alexander Hayward are just some of our current Fellows. You can read about their experiences of the FMA, their take on some key FMA values, and what they gained from the programme in our case studies section.

The assessment process at a glance

• The FMA is peer assessed in a face-to-face meeting where candidates demonstrate their continuing achievement of the FMA criteria.

• Candidates will need to submit a formal application at least one month prior to attending an appraisal.

• Those interested in applying for the FMA are asked to book in a preliminary telephone meeting with a member of MA staff before formally registering on the scheme.

• Registration for the updated FMA will officially open in November 2013.

• The first updated FMA appraisals will take place in early 2014.

Costs

There is a £200 fee to formally register an application to become an FMA, followed by a subsequent £200 assessment fee.
