I have the pleasure of volunteering somewhere I have always wanted to work and with a period that interests me. I’m a volunteer in the 1930s domestic rooms at the museum and have a wardrobe of clothes that fit the era.

I tell visitors the story of the rooms and how life would have been lived. The rooms evoke so many memories for visitors, many of whom can remember the distinctive furniture and decor. I’ve also supported the learning team on workshops.

Sometimes it’s not just how things look that can trigger memories. Recently, I met a visitor from down south whose grandparents had moved there from the Black Country. She asked if I could talk in what was my natural accent and, on hearing me, her face lit up. The accent obviously brought back memories of her grandparents and she said I had made her day.

I spent a lot of my working life in the HM Courts and Tribunal Service. Dealing with people from different backgrounds provided me with good communication skills, which helps with my volunteering.
