I come from Egypt but arrived in the UK knowing little about Egyptian history. When I moved to Preston, I fell in love with the Harris Museum & Art Gallery, the building and the collections.

I began volunteering earlier this year and my role has been varied. My colleagues have been helpful and supportive, and have got me involved in different duties such as assisting in the Egyptian Balcony tours, where I have learned a lot about my own country’s history that I didn’t know.

For example, I didn’t realise that Nefertiti and Nefertari were not the same person; the former was the wife of Akhenaten, an Egyptian pharaoh, the latter was the wife of the later pharaoh Ramesses II.

I have carried out and analysed public surveys, welcomed the public during big events, promoted events and exhibitions, and handled and explained historic objects to visitors, as well as helped with museum administration.

The Harris has a large variety of events and exhibitions; whatever someone’s age or interest, there will be something to admire or to entertain them. It is a wonderful place to spend time and I hope to beable to continue to assist and learn in the museum for a long time.
