I worked in retail for 38 years and first became involved in volunteering while working at a Sainsbury’s store in London Docklands where I helped establish a local horse riding school for the disabled. I was invited to the opening in the company of Princess Anne. Seeing what a difference the centre made to the children made it all worthwhile.

When I retired last August, I was not prepared to be bored so I took a volunteer job at the Stockport Plaza theatre. Although I enjoyed it, football and history remained my real passions.

On a visit to the National Football Museum, I was impressed by the objects and staff. The following week, I brought in lots of my football memorabilia and started volunteering soon after for two days a week.

I get to meet football fans from across Europe and enjoy sharing stories with them. I have been watching football for 54 years, so have a lot of memories.

I also enjoy helping new volunteers gain confidence, especially those who have not worked with the public before. It doesn’t matter if they don’t know anything about football, it’s about being approachable.

My favourite objects are the 1966 World Cup trophy and ball, as I watched the game on television with my late father.
