I have worked in museums – in paid and volunteer roles – for 30 years, but the Metropolitan Police Crime Museum is where I always wanted to be since my interest in crime began when I was a teenager.
After months of security vetting, I was welcomed into the official Met Police Volunteers three years ago.
As well as documentation, archive and research activities, I have also helped in reorganising displays including the Crippen cabinet, the gun drawers, the Great Train Robbery exhibits and the Jack the Ripper wall.
I have helped compile the first ever catalogue of the museum’s contents and I am currently sorting and listing objects to prepare for our forthcoming move to the Crime Museum’s new home in the Curtis Green building next door to the old Scotland Yard building at London’s Embankment.
For the recent Crime Museum Uncovered exhibition at the Museum of London, I researched case histories and exhibits, located objects in storage and, most importantly, I often made the tea.
One item in the museum that freaks me out is a mannequin with the actual jacket and mask worn by a serial attacker. From the corner of your eye and with the lighting being quite low, it can look like a real person standing there.
