I volunteer in order to give back something to London.

I was originally motivated by my experience as a gamesmaker for the 2012 Olympics and started at the museum’s archaeological archive through the Volunteer Inclusion Programme.

After completing the pilot course for conservation and cleaning, I was involved with the cleaning and marking of archaeological stone that was covered in dust due to the storage conditions. We had to wear Tyvek suits and masks and use vacuum cleaners on backpacks to do the job.

Another project was to follow the London Wall trail to identify missing and out-of-date markers. The Museum of London has provided training that has enabled us to contribute to an exhibition at the Docklands site, Soldiers and Suffragettes, of photographs by Christina Broom.

I have also had training on how to deal with asbestos – I now know how dangerous it
can be. I am retired from the National Archives but I keep myself busy with rehearsing and performing with a jazz choir. I also have season tickets to both my local football clubs – Chelsea and Fulham.
