I have such an enthusiasm for industrial heritage that when I saw an advert for a volunteer at Thinktank, I could not resist applying.

At the moment, I am on-hand to enhance visitors’ understanding of Thinktank’s new Spitfire Gallery. I tell visitors about the plane and Birmingham’s role in the construction of it; not many people know of its links to the city.

They ask challenging questions sometimes that really keep me on my toes. I can talk about all sorts of things now. I particularly remember my first school group. It was daunting because, at first, I didn’t quite know what to say but the students soon became very enthusiastic.

The exhibit is great because they get to dress up and experience what it is like to sit in a Spitfire cockpit and fly the plane.

I am currently studying for a master’s in museum and heritage management at Nottingham Trent University, as well as working at the Black Country Living Museum as a learning assistant.

I love volunteering and I take any opportunity that comes my way.

My postgraduate course has provided me with a range of skills that make it easier for me to undertake additional museum tasks and roles when they become available. It is great to be able to practice what I have learnt at university.
