“I’ve always had an interest in Dickens and his period and after recently finishing an MA in Victorian Studies at Birkbeck, University of London, I looked for a way to put all that I had learned to some practical use. Having visited the Charles Dickens Museum a few times before, I felt it was the perfect place.
I combine my volunteering with part-time work in a cafe. Both jobs involve welcoming a wide range of people.
During the morning, I am a room steward greeting visitors, answering their questions and helping protect the exhibits. In the afternoon, I head to the Suzannet Research Library to help out with curatorial work.
At the moment, I am helping curator Louisa Price work through the books and pamphlets collection, cleaning the items, checking their catalogue entries and ensuring that any fragile or damaged items are appropriately stored.
I feel very lucky to be able to handle such exciting materials as first editions, illustrations and a whole range of Dickens-related publications.
I often hear the education staff engaging children in a Victorian-themed sing-along as they clamber up the stairs so I’m really looking forward to helping out around Christmas, that most Dickensian time of the year.”
