The Art Fund has launched its biennial survey of UK museum directors, which will help inform its new five-year strategy for 2027–2032 and shape its funding work.

In 2024, the survey found that two-thirds of directors were concerned about funding shortfalls in light of shrinking budgets and the cost-of-living crisis.

The survey, which takes between 15 and 20 minutes to complete, includes questions around funding, planned collections work and exhibitions, and visitor figures.

Directors are asked to outline any recent adjustments to their offer, from reduced opening times to paid exhibitions; share membership schemes and audience development work; and outline the main challenges they are facing at this time.

Next, directors can say what they think the Art Fund’s priorities should be in the next two years, with regards to funding, audience making and amplifying the sector.

“The more UK museum and gallery directors who complete this survey, the better we are able to represent and support every size and type of organisation across the UK,” the Art Fund said.

“Your insights shape our next five-year strategy, inform our future programmes, and strengthen our political and public advocacy on behalf of museums and galleries across the UK.”

The deadline to complete the 2026 survey is 26 January.
