The Museums Association’s (MA) revised Code of Ethics has been passed with a 91% majority at its Annual General Meeting, which took place today during the association's annual conference in Wales.
The Code of Ethics for Museums provides a framework for the practical application of ethical considerations to everyday work in museums and reflects a contract of trust between museums and the public.
The last update to the Code of Ethics took place in 2015. A notable change to the 2025 version is its new structure and principles, which are based on the guiding values of being equitable and inclusive, transparent and accountable, and responsible and sustainable.
The new code also embeds new areas of practice such as anti-racism, decolonisation, climate action and AI.
Sharon Heal, director of the MA, said: “We are delighted to be launching the new Code of Ethics for Museums at our conference in Wales. The new code is the result of thorough consultation with our members, the wider sector and key stakeholders.”
“Since we published the last version of the code, we’ve had a pandemic, the cost-of-living crisis and an increase in polarisation and divisions in society so this review felt incredibly timely.

“Through the review we wanted to consider these significant changes for the sector and society and the ethical ramifications they have had. Changes in how we work in museums also means the new code is more people-centred and emphasises the importance of equitable and collaborative relationships with local and source communities.”
