The front window of Horsham Museum was smashed and a donation box stolen durimg a break-in this week.

Police are appealing for information about the burglary, which took place at around 6.40am on Tuesday September 16.

The West Sussex museum was closed that day but reopened on Wednesday. No artefacts were damaged or stolen during the burglary, but a cash donation box containing around £100 was taken.

A statement from the museum said: “Sussex Police have been notified and are actively investigating the matter. We are currently helping with their enquiries.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and appreciate the public’s understanding whilst we work to restore the site.”

A Sussex Police spokesperson said: “The front window was smashed and a donation collection box which contained around £100 was stolen.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident or who has relevant information such as CCTV or mobile footage to report it to us online or by phoning 101 quoting serial 181 of 16/09.”

Founded in 1893, the museum and art gallery is dedicated to local history and houses collections relating to Horsham and the wider district.

The incident comes after a break-in at Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum last week, during which 17 antique pocket watches and a flint lock blunderbuss attached to a bayonet were stolen.
