ACE awards £12.2m from Museum Resilience Fund
More than 90 museums and sector bodies win grants to build resilience
Arts Council England (ACE) has awarded £12.2m from its Museum Resilience Fund to support museums to become more sustainable and resilient businesses.
The second round of the fund saw 94 museums and sector bodies awarded funding.
These include Southampton City Art Gallery, which was granted £450,000 to work with four partner galleries across Hampshire to raise the profile of Southampton’s fine art collection and create an ambitious artistic programme across the county; the Port Sunlight Museum in Wirral, which received £170,000 to create a resident’s hub, with space for meetings and workshops, a community garden and special exhibitions gallery; and The National Holocaust Centre, which was awarded £95,550 to expand its education and outreach services and support audience growth and development.
The fund also saw £182,000 awarded to the Happy Museum initiative to launch an affiliate scheme and create a skills development network; and the Museums Association was awarded £407,662 to expand its Transformers programme, supporting individual and organisational change for mid-career professionals.
John Orna-Ornstein, ACE’s director of museums, said: “The focus of our investment approach for museums in 2015-18 is on building a more resilient sector.
“The Museum Resilience Fund is a key part of that, providing vital support to museums right across the country. The fund responds directly to the challenges facing museums like those in Lancashire and Kirklees, and also supports major strategic initiatives such as the Museums Association’s Transformers programme.”
