Woodhorn Museum in Northumberland is among the beneficiaries of Arts Council England’s latest round of Strategic Touring Programme funding.

The museum is involved in a partnership led by the AV Festival that has secured £272,000 to tour artist Susan Stenger’s sound installation piece, Sound Strata of Coastal Northumberland.

The work premiered at the AV Festival 14, which took place in north-east England in March. The installation will visit several venues along the Northumberland coastline, including the Woodhorn Museum, the Gymnasium Gallery in Berwick and the Lookout Tower on Holy Island.

The arts council set up the £45m Strategic Touring Programme to give more people access to good-quality artistic works. The initiative targets areas with low levels of art engagement and those that rely on touring for arts and culture.

The other projects in this round include a scheme to take a juggling show to rural and small-scale venues, and new touring activity by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment to increase access and participation for audiences from the Midlands and south-east.

The programme has awarded more than £10m to national touring projects since it began in 2012.

The deadline for the next round of funding is 9 January 2015.
